Singing and performing isn’t just what Angel does—it’s who she is. So, when The Cover Girls disbanded in the early ’90s, Angel, the group’s lead singer and the iconic voice behind all their hits, didn’t simply fade away.
Navigating the music industry as a solo artist, however, came with challenges. Not only did Angel face the difficulties of establishing herself outside a successful girl group, but she also encountered strong opposition from her former management.
This made it hard not only to make a living but, more heartbreakingly, to pursue the one thing she’d always dreamed of: singing.
As her previous management formed a new version of The Cover Girls, obstacles in the industry multiplied. Threats to promoters, club owners, and agents made it nearly impossible for Angel to secure her career.
Then, in 2002, Angel’s professional relationship with a new agent, Latif Mercado, became personal—a shift that sent ripples through the Freestyle community.
The threats grew more severe and public, and many artists, forced to choose between their friendship with Angel and their careers, ultimately turned their backs.
